Stop Wage Garnishment

Anyone can get into financial trouble, through no fault of their own. Job losses, adjustable rate mortgages that suddenly double in size, and other circumstances outside one's control can mean that anyone can get behind in their bills and debt. Trying to stop wage garnishment on your own can be a tough situation since of course no one enjoys dealing with bill collectors. And if they have gotten permission to garnish your wages then your unpaid debt now becomes a legal matter.

You can still stop wage garnishment even at this point; the key is to get the right help and to understand your options. Very often this means meeting with a legal advisor that can explain things to you and represent you in court, if necessary. They can also work out other arrangements with bill collectors that will stop wage garnishment and help you in this area.

On Your Own

You may be able to stop wage garnishment on your own if you're willing to work with the bill collector and arrange a new payment plan. Often however this is difficult because they only attach to wages after they've tried other collection methods. In other words, if you had paid the bill previously in good faith they wouldn't need to be garnishing your wages! So it is difficult to stop wage garnishment with the promise of a regular payment.

Your other option to stop wage garnishment on your own is to make a lump sum payment that takes care of the debt completely. Often it's good to call the collection company beforehand and explain your intentions as they may need to give you a certain amount that is due, and they need to properly credit your account with the amount you pay. This will stop wage garnishment.

Getting Help

Often it's better to get help to stop wage garnishment so that you know it will be handled completely. This may be the services of a loan consolidator, if you have many bills for which you owe money, or it may be a lawyer that can represent you in court. If you do not have the funds needed to stop wage garnishment with a lump sum payment and your bills are monumental, then bankruptcy may be in order.

When you ask for help to stop wage garnishment it's good to be honest about your financial picture overall, even if it's very bleak. This is so that the person or persons helping you can give you all the options that would work for you. They need to see your entire financial picture in order to know the best advice to give you to stop wage garnishment and to assist with other debt you may have.

You do have options in order to stop wage garnishment, and although it's an unpleasant situation it can be dealt with. Asking for help will mean getting yourself back on track financially and finally being free of debt, or at least having debt that you can reasonably manage every month.
